The beginnning of fashion started in England which was no big suprise to me..I thought that it was pretty intresting that they had plenty of cotton and wool textile. The facts about the cotton gin were no big suprise either...the cotton in the south was a big deal because of slavery and thats what the south was know for and the textile industries also...but because the jobs are getting sent over seas, its taken away from the work force here in North Carolina today.
The "RTW or Ready To Wear" was very intresting to me...I have never heard it in those term before. But it makes since that these type of clothing were first brought about due to the Civil War. The order in which it the "RTW"was manufactures was the men where first, children, boys, girls, and the women came lastly...but the order makes since because during the time the women where the ones who were at home taking care of things around the house and sewing and make clothes were one of them.
The thing that bothered me most in the reading was the part about the sweat shops..there were not good enviroment for anyone to work and most importantly the children..It is also very alarming that this condition still exist here in 2008..I would like to learn more about the sweat shops and I will be doing my research..I know a lot of these condition do have something with the U.S because a lot of the products that we consume today are made in other countries.
A couple of intresting facts that I learned in this weeks reading and extra side notes in class was that the first fashion magazine was Bazzar in 1867 and I did not have a clue but it was a great fact. Another intresting fact that I learned was "Brooks Brothers was the first mens appearal store". Mahattan is thed garment district.
Overal I thought this chapter was very informing.
